Synopsis
The book features Mail Pouch Tobacco barns as well as others painted with old-fashioned advertisements. The history of these gorgeous old bits of roadside Americana comes to life with stunning photographs of these crumbling relics of America's rural past. The book includes a profile of a man who painted hundreds of Mail Pouch Tobacco barns as well as photographs of barn ad memorabilia. A nostalgic look at the way America used to advertise, this beautiful book is a sure bet to tug at the heartstrings of those who long for a simpler time., This is a lavish celebration of these nostalgic icons, which now have become crumbling relics of America's rural past., For Harley Warrick, painting Mail Tobacco barns was just a job-a simple occupation that over the years became much more than a way to put food on the table. Painting barns made him famous-a folk hero who was profiled in magazines, newspapers, and on television. He even was an integral part of the Smithsonian's exhibit at the Montreal World's Fair in 1967. He gained such widespread attention because his craft was dying. And so were the Mail Pouch barns that had once beckoned to motorists making their way through the back roads of the country. Thousands were painted over after the Highway Beautification Act, regulating roadside advertising, passed in 1965. Many more were lost to the elements and encroaching urbanization. But hundreds of others, touting Mail Pouch, Rock City Gardens, Meramec Caverns, and Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets, survived and still dot the rural landscape of America. In Advertising Barns: Vanishing American Landmarks, author/photographer William G. Simmonds showcases the rugged beauty of more than 150 of them, as well as tells their story, one that legends like Harley Warrick-who died in November 2000-aren't around to share anymore.
