It is now exactly 60 years since the youthful Ian Allan published the first of his 'abc' series covering the locomotives of the Southern Railway. Published at the height of World War 2, this first excursion into publishing was soon to be followed by companion volumes dealing with the locomotives of the other three of the 'Big Four' railway companies and, from these small beginnings, the company expanded into the world's leading transport publisher. At the height of the interest in train spotting, in the 1950s and 1960s, several hundred thousand copies of each of the 'abc' volumes were sold annually. Apart from individual volumes dealing with the locomotives of the 'Big Four' (and later the BR regions), the company also produced combined volumes that listed all the locomotives listed in the parts. These combined volumes were and are highly collectible and, over recent years, Ian Allan Publishing has been selectively reprinting these classic works of railway history. For 2002, the combined volume for 1951 is the volume selected. As with other volumes in the series, the book chronicles all the locomotives then in service on British Railways. Information given includes technical data, designer, date of introduction, number in service and much else. The selected year is one of considerable interest; the first of the BR Standard classes were due to be introduced and, after two years of Nationalisation, the last of the pre-Nationalisation designs to be constructed were coming off the production lines. Alongside the detailed analysis of the locomotives in service is a comprehensive selection of photographs portraying the great variety of locomotives in service at the time. With nostalgia for the age of steam showing no signs of abating, this new reprint of a classic Ian Allan Publishing 'abc' is certain to be popular amongst all railway enthusiasts and is an appropriate volume to launch the company's 60th anniversary year.
