Rome's ruins were little regarded before tourists, architects and painters in the Renaissance found them both historically interesting and aesthetically attractive. This prompted their conservation, restoration and presentation over the centuries as modern visitors see them now. They first engaged the attention of later mediaeval tourists, just as they do today. The interest of travellers was captured in the Renaissance by artists, architects, topographers, antiquarians, archaeologists and writers.
