It's like rubber tubes with led lights behind them, that way it's easy on the eyes as you aren't looking at the light directly. The stand it came with was pretty cheap but of you're going to hang it up on the wall, like I did, the stand doesn't matter. It's light weight enough to hangup with thumbtacks.

Bought this as a gift for my grandson who’s moving into his own room now and picked gaming as his decor. I think he will love the light. It just needs a power source to put the USB end into . I like that it has a control switch to turn it on and off once it’s plugged in. I put my coffee cup next to the sign. The listed dimensions are accurate and this is a perfect size and not too bright. Could work great as a night light. Photos show room lights on and off.
