"Make[s] the case for a more diverse approach to a timeless subject." "An in-depth look at our contemporary and historical fixation with the body and the nude." Synopsis
Beautiful, handsome, flawless - the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. In this study, Frances Borzello - a skilled communicator with an ability to make us want to look at art and think anew about it - has much to say about modern art and about our contemporary and historical fixation with the body and the nude. The book memorably contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected artistic nude of Kenneth Clark's classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form , with today's depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, both male and female, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time. Borzello explores the role of the nude in 20th- and 21st-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Subsequent chapters focus in turn on body art, performance art, new perspectives of women artists, and the nude in painting, portraiture, sculpture - and its most extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone., Nudes that deliberatelybehave provocatively andpose awkward questions:how artists portray thebody in contemporary art, The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless, its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism, or imperfection. Here Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, perfected artistic nude of Kenneth Clark's classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with today's depictions: raw, uncomfortable, disturbing. Grittier and more subtle, the new nude--both male and female --confronts us with the hidden issues and contradictions of the body and our relationship to it. Borzello's story of the nude begins with a tale of life, death, and resurrection, exploring how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Subsequent chapters take a thematic approach, exploring the nude in painting, portraiture, sculpture, performance, and body art; in the work of female artists; and in extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone.

The listing was for a hardcover version of this book; however, I received a paperback. The Seller replied quickly to my question about this issue and issued a full refund - and let me keep the book. So, a diligent Seller for sure - and well packaged and reasonable timing on shipping. Thank you for the refund, and as you suggested, I'll likely donate this volume and seek the hardcover.

Great transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe

Excellent purchase. Was able to get all three items from the one seller. Seller was able to bundle all three items together into one package. Items as described and arrived in perfect condition. Good communication around shipping and tracking as items delayed and not able to be delivered by original estimate. Thanks to shipping updates I was able to track the items arriving before the extended delivery time. Thank you for making these items available on EBay.
