The Canon Speedlite 270EX II Flash is a very compact, very lightweight, and feature-packed flash unit that is capable of shooting wirelessly using a remote control. It can be combined easily with Canon EOS digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras that have a commander or master function ability. The Canon 270EX can also function as a slave flash unit that increases its value for flash photographers. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II has the ability to bounce light vertically on walls or other similar surfaces up to 90 degrees. This feature makes the Speedlite 270EX a very versatile tool for light setups that helps shooters in creating more complex images. The 270EX II model along with the 580EX II, 430EX II, and 320EX II are all part of the Canon EX Speedlite series’ lineup. Canon EX Speedlites work with all the cameras under the Canon EOS DSLR series and also in some digital cameras that have a flash shoe mount, such as the Canon PowerShot cameras. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II has a tilt-head function that can move from 0 to 60 to 75 to 90 degrees. This is one of the advantages of the 270EX II over the other previous versions of the Canon Speedlite flash units. The Canon 270EX II is lighter in weight compared to its predecessors after an improvement on design only required 2 AA alkaline (LR6) batteries to be used. The silent charging feature is also a big plus for this flash unit. In addition, the recycling time for the Canon Speedlite 270EX II is around 0.1-3.9 seconds on normal flash and approximately 0.1-2.6 seconds on quick flash. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II also features a Tele Function that helps in making easier adjustments. Using this feature, the photographer can light up a scene to his or her satisfaction easily since the guide number and angle of illumination can be manipulated easily. The 270EX II has four native functions, such as auto power off, quick flash with continuous shot, slave auto power off timer, and slave auto power off cancel. These basic Speedlite functions can be easily accessed through the EOS DSLR’s menu. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II does not have a master or commander function. It can, however, serve as a remote flash trigger for the built-in flash on the camera but with a two-second delay. Using a small button at the side of the 270EX II’s body, the Speedlite turns into a wireless remote controller compatible with EOS DSLRs that works smoothly with Canon’s RC-6 controllers. The 270EX II’s Slave function can be controlled by the built-in controller in the camera or by an external controller. This slave function uses light and line of sight or through strategic positioning of the unit on areas. The Speedlite has a dedicated switch to activate and deactivate the slave function easily. A two-position zoom feature is also very handy since this helps to focus the Speedlite’s light on a subject. The Canon Speedlite 270EX ii weighs 155 grams. It measures approximately 2.6 inches by 2.6 inches by 3.0 inches.
