Hannibal, Missouri, known worldwide as the boyhood hometown of Mark Twain and immortalized in Twain's masterpieces The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, has a rich history, both pre- and post-Twain. Because of its proximity to the river and the daily arrival of steamboats on the levy, the small hamlet grew from 30 settlers in 1819 to a bustling town of more than 6,500 when Mark Twain left Hannibal in the late 1850s.
