These were the words in which you did me the honour of introducing me to the British Association at Oxford, in 1847, when laying before the Meeting of that Society the results of your researches into the origin and affiliation of the languages of mankind. But the hope you then expressed was not realized; and I fear that, if you have looked again over my paper as it stands printed in the Transactions of the British Association, it may have disappointed you. The great question, the question of real historical interest, the connexion, namely, of the southern languages of India with any other established family of speech, was in my essay hardly touched on.
