On a prison ship bound for the penal colony of French Guiana, a convict named Papillon - sentenced to life imprisonment of a murder he did not commit - offers to become the bodyguard of Louis Dega, a famous forger known to be carrying a lot of money, in return for financial help with his escape plans. In Guiana, the two men are sent to a work camp in the jungle, where Papillon manages to buy a boat from a butterfly trader and then makes a desperate escape from camp after stopping a guard from beating Dega. But he is double-crossed by the trader, and brought back to solitary confinement, where his meagre rations are supplemented at first by food smuggled in by Dega; he is put on half rations and shut in total darkness.
