Additional informationPersonnel: Charlie Feathers (vocals, guitar); Troy Jones, Tiny Fuller, Ramon Maupin (guitar); Marcus Van Story (electric bass); Bubba Feathers, Bubba Fuller (drums). Audio Remixers: George Paulus; Johnny Phillips. Liner Note Author: George Paulus. Recording information: Select-O-Hits Studios, Memphis, TN (1967/1969). This more-than-slightly eccentric Memphis-based artist may have turned off concert audiences with his penchant for telling long, boring stories when he should be rocking, but his recording sessions tend to be good stuff. First things first, he knows how to put a good groove together, with the music ranging from brisk rockabilly to slower country numbers. It is the type of playing where not a note is wasted, not a single unnecessary lick played. Everything is cut down to the basics. Floating over the top of this are his vocals, which are completely unique. There is no one singing rock, rockabilly, or country with a voice like this, although many mouths have opened in attempt. He can sound sinister, romantic, or funny. The vocal effects he uses run the full range of what works for communication in rockabilly music -- hiccups, whines, muffled burps, and mumbling included. One of the great things that happens is the transformation of well-known country material into music that is totally Feathers' own. He is certainly one of the most original interpreters of the songs he chooses. The sessions were recorded by Tom Phillips and are a re-creation of the vintage Sun sound. Players are all part of the regular Feathers gang, including Bubba Fuller on drums. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
