ReviewsA brilliant and honest book, written from two perspectives. The first half is by a professional, Dr Priyanka Pradhan and gives an inside account of the brain's functions and the perspective of a Neuropsychologist. It's simple to understand and relatable to a patient or carer. Personally, I found the second half really useful, written by Anna, who suffered a concussion. As a brain injury sufferer, a lot of her story rang true to me. The advice and tips laid out were easy to follow and put into practice. Having two writers giving two sides of a story is really powerful. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is living with concussion/brain injury and also to family and friends of the victim.
SynopsisConcussion, even in its mildest form, can have lasting effects on the individual, long beyond the 3 months during which it's expected to resolve. If post-concussion syndrome is affecting you, there is much in this book to help you manage symptoms. Written by neuropsychologist Dr Priyanka Pradhan, and also drawing on the experiences of Anna Leggett, whose life was changed by post-concussion syndrome following a car accident, this book offers a complete manual for overcoming the impact of any mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Priyanka offers a full explanation of how concussion happens and how it may present, and gives detailed advice on managing persistent symptoms - including when, and where, to ask for professional and specialist medical help. Anna draws on her own experiences to give detailed insight on lifestyle changes that can help, including the importance of sleep, nutrition and the specific therapies and practical treatments that worked for her. Covering the full spectrum of self-management techniques and therapeutic approaches, this is a resource for anyone who seeks practical and emotional support for what is essentially an invisible condition, but which is very real for you, or your loved one., Concussion, even in its mildest form, can have lasting effects on the individual in a way we're only just beginning to understand. Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (mTBI), concussion and post-concussion syndrome have previously been conservatively managed with recommendations for 'rest'. But even mild brain injuries and post-concussion syndrome can have an enormous impact on life, long after the 3 months during which they are expected to resolve. There are also significant differences between the way in which concussion affects men and women respectively, as this new research shows. If concussion or an mTBI are affecting you, there is much in this book to help and support your symptoms. Neuropsychologist Dr Priyanka Pradhan has pulled together the latest research to provide a complete manual for overcoming the impact of any mild brain injury. Her book explains what a concussion is and how it may present, and give practical strategies for managing persistent symptoms. Such strategies include not only how to ask for professional and specialist medical help (and where to get it from), but also self-management techniques that draw on things like EMDR, craniosacral therapy and osteopathy. Understanding and Living Well After Concussion also explains the importance of sleep and diet, and includes significant psychological and emotional support for mental wellbeing and recovery, a support that is often missing from the clinical pathway for post-concussion syndrome. This book is an essential resource for anyone who feels that they need insight, practical help and emotional support into what is often perceived as an almost-invisible illness, but one which is very real for you or your loved one.
