I'm a retired educator who early on in my life learned to appreciate the beauty of secondhand things from my father, who often took me along on his treasure hunts in the "as is" section of our local thrift store. One day, when we weren't really looking for it, we found my first real two-wheeler--a slightly worn (what's now called "gently used") but fully functional Schwinn Stingray. It was lime green and had high-rise handlebars and an off-white banana seat. My father purchased the bike for almost nothing, which was what we could afford. Before I knew it he had cleaned it up, replaced its balding tires, and mounted a shiny red bell on the bars and reflectors on the spokes. He even sprung for new handgrips, the kind with tassels. I didn't care that it wasn't new. It was new to me. And it was exactly what I wanted. It was perfect.
