I hadn't paid much attention to the fastening (which was clearly shown in the photos on eBay). The buckle is cosmetic and not used for securing the cover. The prong sticks upwards and outwards which I think may cause damage to the sleeve of clothing over time. The bag was described as made from canvas but it's polyester/cotton (although still better than other bags which are purely polyester).
