This Belle glass ornament is far too heavy—64g vs my friend’s 36g, nearly twice the weight. The excess comes from a very thick gloss layer on the bottom of the skirt, resembling a sheet of ice. It creates a “double image” effect (like double-pane glass) when the ornament’s surface reflects in the gloss (see photos). Gloss is often used to conceal flaws such as craquelure, cracks, or repairs. This altered ornament should have been listed as modified, with full disclosure of what was done and why.
