We focus on a time when women of artistic talent formed small societies to allow them to prosper as plate and ceramic decorators. The time when men, working in huge ceramic factories, strained at rows of tile presses and braved the heat of the massive, towering, bottle kilns. A time when the English and American clay industries reached their zenith to employ more people than any other on Earth. A time when the most amazing ceramics and tiles were fashioned, their designs and styles establishing artistic movements and driving the entire artistic world. A time when the American people discovered tile and how tiles could improve their homes, institutions, establishments, and their lives. A time where beautifully decorated tiles, covered with rich colorful glazes and imaginative designs, brought art into working class homes, and made those homes more sanitary and safer from the hazards of fire.
