The pen housing is secure but perhaps irritating if you click the pen in and out of it frequently. Better to have it attached on a cord if you keep this pad on a vertical surface. The CR2016 3v battery supposedly lasts years with enough charge for tens of thousands of erase cycles and It's at the top of the case, secured with a single screw. I still prefer my rechargeable AAAAs that go in the 10.5 board.
