First off, I'd like to say hi and thanks for dropping by my profile. I hope this day finds you in good health and temperament. As for me, not much to tell. I grew up in south Florida, where I still reside, and do my best not to take it for granted.

Sands of the Kalahari Blu-ray Region A

A top-notch Desert Chiller with Hammer overtones!
Being a fan of desert-bound adventures since I was a kid, I was amazed that somehow I managed to overlook this gem. Fortunately, the quality of this Olive Films release is outstanding, and I'd be hard-pressed to lament not having seen it earlier via some godawful pan-and-scan TV print or on vintage VHS. Short of seeing Kalahari on its original theatrical run, Olive's excellent Blu-ray up on the biggest HD screen available is the next best thing. The expansive desert scenery in Kalahari is as much of a character as any of the cast, and looks stunning in widescreen 1080p... as well as appropriately ominous. Director Cy Endfield (Mysterious Island, Zulu) was never one to revel in lots of flashy camerawork and extraneous technique. Here, his straightforward approach pays big dividends, keeping viewers focused on what's going on in front of the camera, not behind it. The film's veteran players tackle their roles with great zeal and sincerity, under what must've been grueling location conditions. Likewise, the lovely Susannah York, nearing the height of her popularity, does an admirable job of holding her own amidst an otherwise all-male ensemble. Aside from handling directorial chores, Endfield wrote Kalahari's screenplay as well. His characters and their motivations are entirely believable, which makes it easy to forget one is merely watching a movie. All said, Endfield's unflinching take on personal survival, served up with a capable cast and numerous plot twists, makes for a harrowing cinematic jaunt you're not likely to forget!

A fine trilogy that deserves a much higher rung on fantasy filmdom's ladder
I purchased this triple feature on the likely chance that I would enjoy the films, as they were made by the same studio responsible for the classic Gamera series, which I dearly love. Add to that, many of the Gamera effects artists also lent their considerable talents to the Daimajin films. To my surprise, their efforts here often outshine those of the beloved fire-breathing tortoise. As for the film's themselves, the production design, pacing, plot and characters are all above par, especially for a modestly-budgeted fantasy. As opposed to the Gamera series, the Daimajin films are clearly not aimed at the juvenile set, and are actually somewhat somber in tone. Unlike most films to feature an over-sized protagonist, the Daimajin series does not contain wall-to-wall mayhem. When chaos does ensue, I'd say there's a fair chance you WON'T be disappointed. Not much more can be said of these unique films without delving into spoiler territory. Fans of classic kaiju are almost certain to enjoy them, but I can't imagine anyone who appreciates thoughtful cinema not enjoying them equally as well.
